Understanding Sustainability
Sustainable lifestyle. has a different meaning depending on the industry you are in. UNICEF wants equality, poverty eradicated, elimination of discrimination, and fair treatment for all.
Car companies such as Tesla, BMW, and Hyundai promote sustainable living by making an effort to lessen their carbon footprint in the future.
Skincare companies care about not testing on animals, child abuse, and ensuring employees are treated well throughout production. The common factor is, ensuring the decisions we make now, aren’t destroying the environment but preserving it for a brighter future for all.
Eco-friendly swaps
If you are like my mom who uses a single-use plastic bag for almost everything, then a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t naturally come to you. Here’s how to start
SKINCARE SWAPS
Instead of using plastic containers for your skincare packaging , choose glass , wood pulp based package or light weight technology . If you find yourself with plastic packaging , ensure you recycle or reuse them. KITCHEN SWAPS
We all live busy lives and the thought of spending an entire day to switch this for that is terrifying. There’s a simpler way, instead of taking a plastic bag every time you walk into the grocery store, purchase two cloth bags at any store, they also have produce bags at Marshalls, Tjmaxx, or just about any store you could think of. After taking home your groceries, place bags in a small basket somewhere in your car where you won’t forget to use them on every shopping trip.
Choose Bamboo over Nylon- did you know it could take ten to hundred years to break down plastic(nylon)? It is a simple switch that produces less waste. let’s do our part.
PERSONAL SWAP
fashionable and sustainable is the new trend
Straws are so in these days- if you are working from home or in the office try
Metal straws, silicone straws, and bamboo straws are so much more fashionable and lasting which become cheaper in the long run.
Okay so Let’s talk about these beautiful water bottles. They are colorful and strong!
Daily steps to sustainable living
- BUY LOCAL– When you buy from small businesses local farmers, and local restaurants you are significantly changing the lives of people you know, you are making a kid’s dream come alive.
- GET MOVING
- MINIMALIST PRACTICES
- Recycle –
- Plastic
- Reuse
- Go Thrifting,
- donate clothes
- Recycle –
- Practice using sustainable materials
- Bamboo package
- Paper-based packaging
- Recycled tube containers
- Glass
- Wood Pulp based packaging
- Choose digital receipts
- Choose email receipt when you get to the register. Your receipt is always handy in case you need to return and if you are like me, that big handbag will have less junk when you need to find your lipstick
- Buy glass food containers– Have you ever tried reheating your food in a plastic container and all of a sudden you are taking it out of the microwave and it is bent out of shape? Heat can cause BPA otherwise known as Bisphenol A to get into your food. BPA is used to make plastic. So depending on who you ask, they will say low levels of BPA are safe.
- If you are busy like me and have zero time to waste trying to figure out every plastic container level of BPA, Just go with the glass to be safe.
- Eat less meat- It takes 1,799 gallons of water to produce just one pound of beef, imagine the number from just your family eating 8 pounds per week. Ok, you get the idea!!
Sustainable Materials
Here are some sustainable materials to switch to and to look for next time you go shopping.
- Bamboo package
- Paper-based packaging
- Recycled tube containers
- Glass
- Wood Pulp based packaging
How can you help?
- Make fun toys– When your toilet paper is finished, use the cardboard part to make trains, and doll houses, or have your child come up with ideas. You could get really creative here.
- Eat less meat
- Use sustainable materials and products
- Support companies that are practicing and promoting sustainable living.
- Teach your children the basics- give them their own recycle container in the kitchen so they can be an active part of the process.
- Give sustainable gifts
- Instead of buying expensive clothes just for retail therapy, donate the ones you have and go thrifting. It has the same effect but you walk away with unique pieces. ITS A WIN-WIN
