What is sustainable beauty?
To truly understand sustainable beauty, first, we must know what is sustainability! A Journal of Dermatology article published in 2022, states sustainability is the ability to provide for your own needs without compromising the needs of others now and in future generations. There are three ways to understand sustainability- The environment, the Economy, and Society!
1. Sustainable beauty benefiting the environment should have
- Natural resources- to lessen pollution
- Maintain Integrity -no destruction of property In production
- Promote overall Balance -adapt to change for good.
2. Sustainable beauty benefiting society should be
- Inclusive of all people
- Protect universal human rights
- Equal pay to workers
- Ensure employees are healthy and have basic needs
- No one is being harmed during production, transportation, etc
3. How to identify sustainable beauty?
I know you are probably wondering, How in God’s name am I supposed to know all this when I just need to buy a moisturizer?
Since sustainability takes into consideration, people, the planet, and the economy.
Let’s start by asking these questions.
- Can I recycle packaging after use?
- Is it beneficial, safe, and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its cycle?
- Am I promoting child labor/child abuse while making the abuser rich?
- Am I supporting a company that is not inclusive of all humans?
• Am I supporting a company that only seeks to be profitable but doesn’t care about the good of people?
• Were products sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using energy that is renewable?
• Is it physically designed to effectively use materials and energy in the best way possible?
4. Sustainable beauty brands
Some sustainable brands include :
- Body shop – They are now taking part in lightweight technology where their packaging has fewer ingredients, which eventually helps with the conservation of natural resources.
- Forever young vegan skincare- https://www.foreveryoungveganskincare.com embraces lightweight technology which includes a glass jar, reducing energy use.
- l-occitane – partners with Theracycle to recycle empty packages in stores and offer rewards to make the deal even sweeter.
- Dior- offers refillable options to promote less packaging needs
- Kheils- -has a recycle bin in each store to encourage recycling
- Susanne Kaufmann- Containers are refillable to promote less use of the product
- Plus skincare – Package free- wood pulp used – dissolvable product package
- la Roche posay- refillable containers with rewards
Choosing sustainable beauty doesn’t mean every last bit of the company is sustainable. Sustainability takes time and planning. However, try to reward the companies that are making an effort.
It eventually is eliminating excess waste, promotes clean beauty, protecting humankind, and renewing energy.
5. Sustainable packaging trends
- Bamboo package
- Paper-based packaging
- Recycled tube containers
- Glass
- Wood Pulp based packaging
6. How to Choose Sustainable beauty
Does the entire ingredient list need to say fruits and vegetables? Absolutely not
- Thinking green is the best place to start, choose products with natural ingredients including fruits, vegetables, juices, herbs, etc.
- Is it labeled natural, organic, green, or vegan?
- Avoid any contact with HARMFUL chemicals and parabens such as Synthetic fragrances:
- Phthalates such as DBP, DEHP, POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL -PEG, RETINOL, and FORMALDEHYDE a type of carcinogen
- SLS (SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE) an environmental toxin, SLES(SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE), TRICLOSAN
- TRICLOCARABAN preservative found in cleaning supplies, BHA &BHT, COAL TAR a carcinogen and also triggers asthma.
These toxins cause irreversible damage to the skin, and when absorbed into the skin can cause serious damage. Some harmful chemicals used are paraben which alters the endocrine hormones.
7. How to practice living a sustainable lifestyle
Let’s put it all together to make sense of all this! Choosing sustainable beauty can be very rewarding. It’s a good feeling to sleep at night knowing my lifestyle doesn’t promote harm to humans or animals.
- Choose nontoxic ingredients not name brands!
- The company should care about fundamental human rights
- Support small business
- support local businesses to provide for small families and local suppliers
- Keep an open eye for the harmful chemicals listed
- look for sustainable packaging,
- Inclusive companies
- Save money and time by choosing companies that place a high value on quality ingredients. One that will not add dangerous chemicals and call it something else! This practice could help you ditch a trip to the dermatologist and save you TIME AND MONEY!!
