What is cruelty free?
Cruelty free is a word we use to describe products created, manufactured, and transported without any use of animal cruelty involved
Cruelty free according to the Journal of Animal Ethics (JAE) there is no real accurate meaning because it can be used as a marketing term or just state disapproval
- of animal slaughter or owning animals for household duties etc.
- or animals being physically harmed or killed in a violent way.
Therefore many of the companies we admire that claim to be cruel free arent truly cruelty-free.
Why can companies still test on animals?
Companies do not get penalized for saying or using the marketing term, “cruelty free” if they aren’t cruelty free.
Countries such as the European Union and Israel are doing their due diligence by banning any new cosmetics products that have been tested on animals. On the other hand, China by law has to do animal testing for brands that pay labs to perform testing.
Companies can still test on animals in countries with no ban even when:
- There are no research-based benefits for testing on animals-
- Most research done on animals is unnecessary
Here’s the thing, they can claim many important questions can never be answered from just humans and so testing on animals can be justified. The bottom line is, that there aren’t strict rules governing animal cruelty and testing, it is not illegal.
This might be really annoying to you as it is to us, but the good thing is there are now ways to identify authentic cruelty free brands that we can celebrate.
How to identify cruelty free brands?
These are three logos that are authentic and trustworthy.
Cruelty-free international- This is an internationally recognized logo the leaping bunny logo is certified by CCIC
Peta -People for the Ethical Treatment of animals has a few different logos and has been updated but this is the main logo
